Michigan Diabetes Research Center: Microscopy, Imaging, and Cellular Physiology Core (MICPC)

The MICP Core provides state-of-the-art protein and RNA imaging and cell physiological analysis to enhance the diabetes-related research at the University of Michigan. The MICPC provides expertise, advice training and equipment for microscopic and morphometric analysis of both protein and RNA in biologic samples in support of research focused on diabetes and its complications or related endocrine and metabolic disorders. The MICPC provides access to a wide variety of microscopy, imaging and electrophysiology equipment that otherwise would be beyond the scope and resources of most investigators. The overwhelming majority of MDRC investigators who require such techniques rely on the MICPC to provide them and their staff with expert consultation, training and support for routine and advanced microscopy and image analysis for protein and RNA morphometric studies and for optogenetic and electrophysiology studies.

Imaging Laboratory

The Imaging Laboratory provides access to state-of-the-art microscopy and image analysis software for morphometric analysis of protein and RNA. The Imaging Laboratory also provides expertise in protein targeted antibody staining for microscopy, live cell imaging and use of fluorescent probes for study of cell signaling.

In Situ Hybridization Laboratory

The In Situ hybridization (ISH) module provides expertise for detecting RNA expression and localization using fluorescent-, radiolabeled- or chromophore- ISH. The core works closely with the imaging core to provide image analysis and quantification of RNA through microscopic imaging.

Optogenetics and Electrophysiology Laboratory

The Optogenetics and Electrophysiology Laboratory provides MDRC investigators access to custom specialized cellular and physiological techniques and expertise, including electrophysiology, optogenetics, and calcium imaging. This laboratory also coordinates with the Imaging Laboratory for fluorescence cell targeting in electrophysiology studies and calcium imaging.
